Green Energy Option as Your Retail Electric Provider - Industry Info
About DeregulationDeregulation in Texas started back in 2002 for the retail market and made it possible for energy companies to compete for your business. The deregulation of electricity generation occurred in 1995 which made it possible for new energy sources to be introduced into our markets.

So now, in the state of Texas you have your Retail Electric Provider (REP), which is who you pay for your power, and your Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP), which is responsible for servicing the lines that actually bring the power to your home. This is the reason you call your TDSP and not your REP when a service interruption occurs. Your TDSP determined automatically according to where you live since the state is divided among several companies.
Your REP is responsible for purchasing energy from available suppliers on your behalf. The price variation among REP companies can be directly attributed to the buying power they have in the marketplace, balanced out with their operating expenses.
What it Means to You
With new sources of energy in the market everybody wins! The environment gets a little cleaner and the customer has more choices, which is always a good thing. The deregulation of the retail market has created competition among companies which leads to lower prices and better service for the consumer.

- The deregulation of electricity began with the separation of the industry into three parts:
- The production of electricity at power plants across the state was deregulated in 1995.
- Transmission and Distribution Service Providers (TDSPs) are wire and pole companies, responsible for ensuring electricity is delivered efficiently and safely
- The Retail Electric Providers (REPs), are responsible for selling electricity, generating bills and providing customer service
- People have the choice to pick between many companies who will be their electricity provider
- Getting Electricity has 3 components.
- Generation
- Transmission and Distribution (getting it into your house).
- Retail Electricity Provider
- Generation:
- Process of converting non–electrical energy to electricity
- For electric utilities, it is the first process in the delivery of electricity to consumers.
- There are different sources of conversion, but in the State of Texas the number one source is Natural Gas.
- Electricity prices are tied directly to the cost of Natural Gas in the open market.
- Costs are rising – Time to Lock In?
- The reason Natural Gas prices affect the electricity prices in Texas is due to the kind of generation plants we use here. 47 % of these plants are Natural Gas power plants and the rest are primarily coal.
- Transmission:
- Transmission and getting it to your house is done by your local utility or TDSP – they own the wires and poles.
- So, no matter who you buy the electricity through, a portion of your money is going to go to the Utility (transmission and distribution).
- The TDSP is responsible for reading your meter You also call the Utility if there is a blackout.
- In Houston, the TDSP in (Centerpoint Energy). EVERY REP – including Reliant – uses the same TDSP.
- The TDSP charges are the same NO MATTER WHICH REP the customer uses.
Retail Electricity Providers (REP's) – Green Energy - A company that sells electricity to customers, provides accurate billing of usage, and provides customer service of the account.
- All retail electric providers must be certified to do business by the Public Utility Commission of Texas.
- We all sell the same electricity! We all are governed by the same laws (the Pubic Utilities commission or PUC).
- Green Energy offers competitive electric rates and plans that are a very inexpensive compared to TXU or Reliant.
- Customer Service and Price are the main differentiators.
- REPs do not deliver electricity or maintain the wires and poles – that's done by the TDSPs (Oncor or Centerpoint).
